TorrentSpy is the go-to tool for torrent power users: it has all of the features the user needs to see statistics of torrents, including active users.
The first thing you should know about TorrentSpy is that it is open source, so you're free to check out all the source code online and even compile it yourself. In earlier versions of TorrentSpy, the user interface was hit-or-miss and had a very outdated appearance. Since the newest release, TorrentSpy's interface has greatly improved and now has a modern look and just requires the user to drag and drop a torrent file on it to get started.
TorrentSpy is jam packed with features. The tabbed interface gives a list of the five categories users are usually the most interested in. The first one is just the general information a user might want to extract from a torrent file: the tracker, file sizes, seeder count, leecher count, and some hashes of the torrent. Of course, this is all information that could easily be found using a website, making this part of the application somewhat useless.
The saving grace of TorrentSpy is that it has many enhanced features as the user goes down the tab menu. The tab called "Data" shows data from the torrent file. It is organized so that users can learn more about how torrent files work and what each value in the file means. While this might not be good for practical purposes, this feature is ideal for anyone who wants an educational experience. TorrentSpy also checks your downloaded torrents' hashes to make sure that they match the expected values. This makes sure that nobody injected data that could contain malware into your torrents.
So, the final verdict is in. TorrentSpy has some features that are fairly unnecessary for most torrent users. The vast majority of torrent tracking websites have the information that is available under the "General" tab. However, TorrentSpy also provides some very interesting features that are not available in many other software projects. We will give it a 4 out of 5.
